While Ethiopia is one of the least developed countries in the world, it is also known for being one of the potential cradles of humanity and - even more important - for coffee. Since Anja was working in Ethiopia for several months, I visited her over Christmas and new year. We first spent some days in the capital Addis Ababa and then hopped on the bus to Bahir Dar at the shore of Lake Tana where we celebrated Christmas in our luxurious hostel room. After some days in tropical surroundings with lush vegetation and abundant bird life, we proceeded East to the historic city of Lalibella. Here we joined a hiking tour along some picturesque but breathtakingly steep escarpments of the Great Rift Valley before we took the plane back to Addis. Fortunately, Anja had gained already some cultural insights during her ongoing work for the Ethopian country office of an international development NGO, so that we were able to immerse ourselves deeper into this fascinating and culturally rich country than we had ever been able as normal tourists. |
