We were very eager
to go hiking in the mountains, but hesitated to book a tour with any of
the major operators. Then we heard about Tesfa, a small ecotourism
organisation which organizes scenic hiking trips through local
villages, involving the local villagers by letting them organize
accomodation, food and even occasional cultural interactions. We had a
great time with our guide Abebe and enjoyed the hospitality of many
villagers as well as their delicious food. We were very positively
surprised how interested the local people were in our life at home,
even though this interest was strongly focused on questions such as the
number of goats we owned and how we grow our staple crops. They
couldn't believe that we didn't even own our own house.
